SYNOD 2021 2023

Synod National Synthesis released

Tuesday, June 28th, 2022:

The Catholic Church in England and Wales has been following the Synodal Process called by Pope Francis, reflecting on the theme “For a Synodal Church: communion, participation, mission” and has now reached an important moment. Since October 2021, the dioceses, national organisations and religious communities have been engaged in listening conversations on the central themes, exploring the way the Church embraces more fully her missionary mandate in the world of today.

The National Synthesis – reflects on Synod reports received by the national synthesis team, discerning the main themes that have emerged from the listening conversations, and collating them together to give a picture of the synodal process in England and Wales.

Survey to be completed by fellow Parishioners of St Agatha's Parish

Pope Francis has asked the whole Catholic Church worldwide to engage in a process of discernment under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. This process is called a synod. It involves everyone in the Church - clergy, religious, and lay Catholics, each participating according to the gifts and charisms of their vocation. The word ‘synod’ comes from two Greek words ‘sun’ meaning together and ‘hodos’ meaning way. The English word synod therefore means making our way together, journeying together along the way, united in Christ, the Way, the Truth and the Life.

It is hoped that as many parishioners as possible will help the Synod to be successful by sharing their thoughts and ideas with honesty and openness in this Survey.

The Survey consists of three Sections:  Communion, Participation and Mission.

The questions in this Survey have been suggested by the Diocese.

The responses to this Survey will be collated by the Parish Delegates (John de Quidt, Nicole Wiggill and Richard Collyer-Hamlin) who will submit these to the Diocese anonymously. No individual email addresses will be included. The Diocese will pass feedback from every parish in its submission to the Bishops' Conference.

The survey can be completed here:

The Survey will close on 19 November 2021. Thank you for taking part in the Synod.

The Synodal Process is a spiritual process. We are asked to pray, listen to God’s Word through Holy Scripture and reflect with both heart and head to seek and find the will of God in our lives and the life of the church.

Before answering the questions we encourage the following Prayer and Scripture passage for reflection.

Opening Prayer

Come Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful and kindle in them the fire of your love. Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created and You shall renew the face of the earth. O, God, who by the light of the Holy Spirit, did instruct the hearts of the faithful, grant that by the same Holy Spirit we may be truly wise and ever enjoy His consolations, Through Christ Our Lord, Amen.

Reading from Sacred Scripture   John 16:12-15

Jesus said ‘I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all the truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come. He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.’
